Kidney anatomy

The kidney is a bean-shaped organ that plays a vital role in filtering waste products and excess fluids from the blood to form urine. Each kidney contains about one million nephrons, which are the functional units responsible for filtration. The outer region, called the cortex, houses most of the nephrons, while the inner region, the medulla, contains the renal pyramids that drain urine into the renal pelvis.
