Bones of the hand

This illustration shows the various bones that make up the hand and wrist. Rendered using 3D software and overlayed using Photoshop.
The human hand contains 27 bones, which are intricately organized to allow for fine motor skills and dexterity. These bones are categorized into three groups: the carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges. The eight carpal bones form the wrist and are arranged in two rows—proximal (scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform) and distal (trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, hamate). The five metacarpal bones form the framework of the palm and articulate proximally with the distal row of carpal bones and distally with the proximal phalanges.
